According to European folklore, on Christmas Eve the forces of Good and Evil fight against each other for the control of the World. Evil spirits are supposed to roam the Earth and to be particularly malevolent on such date. Many Scandinavian legends are set during this particular night, and they often involve trolls who try to trick humans in order to eat them. Authors such as Charles Dickens and Montague Rhodes James teach us that such night is also the most favourable moments for ghostly encounters of various nature.
However, these ghastly creatures have been “tamed” by popular culture and turned into Santa’s Little Helpers.
