We made it at last – Advent is done!
Christmas, as with so many ancient festivals, is a time of renewal — to celebrate the year gone by and welcome the next. As the Winter Solstice comes and goes, the days lengthen again, and DHP slowly rejuvenates for the New Year!
Doing History in Public is itself an ancient institution (by digital standards). Started in the balmy days of 2013, our earliest posts stretch as far back as 4 February 2014. This two-day feast featured a mapping initiative by the then editor, Hira Amin, “to showcase the sheer diversity in research being undertaken at the University of Cambridge by history MPhil and PhD students.” Since then, the Blog has developed a fair number of its own little traditions, from fortnightly posts and ‘Historian Highlights’, to the very thing you are currently reading – our much beloved Advent Calendar (‘beloved’ by its editors, at any rate).
It is said that the first ten years of any organisation’s life are always the most challenging, and DHP has pushed through it under the care of some truly remarkable editors and authors over the year. So on this, our tenth Yule anniversary, may I extend the digital equivalent of applause and adulation to the many hands that steered this ship, beginning with the stupendous 2024 team:
